Set the Tone – First Impressions of Your Restaurant

about 1 year by Grace Olson

We go to restaurants for a change of pace. Whether it’s for a gourmet meal, great ambiance, or simply a night out of the house is up to each of us because there’s always a little something for everyone. The inner workings of restaurants (which the majority of people don’t see) are fascinating. Their function, pace, and the inspiration they need to be successful is so apparent in each and every passionate team member that it makes eating exciting.

While eating is, undoubtedly, a monumental piece of the dining puzzle, so is the reaction one walks away with after their meal. Get the food community talking! Impressed, surprised, and intrigued are all positive words when it comes to the restaurant industry. The reaction you’re striving for starts much sooner than when your patrons savor their first bite of an in-house specialty.

Impressions are made even before your guests experience culinary talent. Just a few ways this is done:

  • Advertising- An old and wise friend, advertising can make or break your customer’s impression. Do you run a formal, grand restaurant or are informal and fun more your niche? Let your marketing efforts reflect your style and therefore help your future customers understand your approach to dining.
  • Atmosphere- Don’t let the “small” details like appropriate lighting and a clean space go without thought. Diners will notice (and keep note of) a tidy versus a messy area and won’t be impressed with, nor return to, the latter.
  • Service- One of the most important parts of running any business! True, restaurants aren’t dealing with brain surgery, but customer service should be taken just as seriously. From the second they arrive to the moment they leave, your patrons are your first priority.

Always experience your restaurant the way a first-time visitor would: the naïve expectations, fresh sights and sounds, and the ease of the encounter. While food is often thought of as the star of the show in the restaurant world, its co-stars deserve respect and attention, too. Impress and shine!
